In Home Care Tips: Creating a Safer Home for Your Aging Loved Ones

If you have a senior loved one who lives at home, you are going to want to take all the necessary precautions to make sure they remain safe. It is wonderful that your senior gets to age in the comfort of their own home! Still, making their home as safe as possible should be a top priority to reduce their chances of an accident. Read through our tips below and learn the steps you can take to ensure your senior is living safely at home.

Take a Walkthrough

First, do a thorough walkthrough of your senior’s home and pay close attention to the details. Check out your senior’s furniture arrangement – What do their pathways look like? Are they clear and free of clutter? Take notice of the flooring too and make sure there are no mobility hazards like loose cords or poorly placed rugs.

Update the Home

Once you have finished a walkthrough and have a list, it is time to make your safety updates. One of the most common updates includes adding handrails in the appropriate areas in the home. Typically, this means in the bathroom above the toilet and in the shower for stability. Other updates include reducing fall hazards by replacing rugs with ones that have a rubber backing and going over un-carpeted flooring with an anti-slip wax.

Stay Connected with Your Senior

Does your senior stay home alone for extended periods of time? If they do, then keeping connected is extremely important. If you are very concerned about their safety, you can install a security camera in the home to check-in. Otherwise, keep in touch with them frequently with a phone call or video chat.

Bring in Professional Help

For the ultimate peace of mind, you may want to consider bringing in a qualified professional to ensure your senior is remaining safe in their home.
