Our New Program for Alzheimer's Care
We have recently chosen to train all our team in the care of dementia related challenges using the Habilitation Training Model. We consider it the gold standard in providing care for those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and other neurocognitive disorders. For us, it's all about being present with our client - to celebrate and expand that which they can do rather than putting focus on that which they have lost or are losing.
Meet our client Chris.
Chris is a 95 yr old woman, who is in the mid stages of Alzheimer's disease. Our daily work with Chris includes engaging her in what she loves most; music. Chris' family and her Extended Family team have worked together to provide her with the opportunity to play a violin that had been collecting dust in her basement for many years. Her ability to recall the songs from the sheet music she plays brings her a sense of accomplishment, (and us a sense of awe), a sense of normalcy and a great deal of pleasure, as evidenced by her bright smile and story telling that go along with this activity. That is meaningful engagement and it is a fundamental need for all of us.
Being present and finding doorways to the memories of the past for people facing these challenges is critical to our success - and our feeling of fulfillment which is what it's all about.
We thank the Alzheimer's Association for their fine program!
